I’m sure we’ve all been there. We try to make changes in our eating habits for whatever reason, only to hear things like:
“OMG, you have to eat that?” (gag sound)
“I don’t understand why you can’t just have a beer? What is one beer gonna do?”
“Seriously, just eat it. It’s not going to kill you.”
“How are you always SO good? It’s so annoying!”
“Are you sure eating that much meat is healthy? That can’t be good for you!”
“What do you mean you’re on a diet? I just made your favorite dessert!”
“Why are you always on a diet? It’s (insert any event here), have a drink!”
I could go on and on.
So, what can we do when we are faced with the food pushers?
I suppose giving them the finger wouldn’t be nice, right? Dammit. That’s what I really want to do….
Here is how I would respond to the statements above:
“OMG, you have to eat that?” (gag sound)
I don’t have to eat anything. I actually love this 🙂
“I don’t understand why you can’t just have a beer? What is one beer gonna do?”
Well, for me, one beer usually leads to two, which leads to bar snacks, which leads to more beer, which leads to late night pizza. No thanks 🙂
“Seriously, just eat it. It’s not going to kill you.”
You’re right, it probably won’t, but I’m not willing to take any chances 🙂
“Are you sure eating that much meat is healthy? That can’t be good for you!”
You know what, since I’ve started eating more protein, I haven’t been nearly as hungry. But thank you for being concerned. I’ll be sure to ask my doctor at my next appointment 🙂
“What do you mean you’re on a diet? I just made your favorite dessert!”
OMG, thank you SO much! I’m sure everyone here is going to be thrilled that I’m not going to eat most of it like I did last year before I ended up leaving with the poops (just kidding, don’t say that! ;))
“Why are you always on a diet? Isn’t it exhausting? Ugh, I would HATE to live like that!”
That’s the best part! You totally don’t have to live like this, isn’t that awesome…we can both eat the way that makes us feel good and not worry about what the other person eats 🙂
Seriously though, own your choices. Don’t let anyone bully you into doing something you don’t want to do. Simple as that.
I totally get how uncomfortable it can be to be put in these situations, so what I want you to do is imagine that situation. What’s the absolute worst thing that can happen? Worst-case scenario. Play it over in your mind. Go there. What would happen?
Would you be ok with the worst-case scenario? I think so.
It is so easy to say yes. But saying yes when you really want to say no, isn’t going to get you anywhere. I know for me, whenever I “gave in”, it would lead to guilt, shame, blame etc. etc.. all because I wanted to please someone else. SO not worth it.
My best advice is to own your choices. Because at the end of the day, it is ultimately YOUR choice. Period 🙂
